  - Note about Harrison: at this time, I can't pin down any documentation about Harrison apart from his name and Eliza's being listed on Uriah's marriage certificates. He seems to be reflected in the early censuses living with parents Thomas and Theodosia. By 1850, when the names of all in a household became a feature in the US censuses, Harrison appeared to fall off the proverbial radar. I don't know if Harrison made the trek to Wayne County, VA with his father, younger sibs and sons in the late 1840's or if he had passed on. Three of his brothers stayed on in Gallia County and had families and farms there.... ND

  - Note about Eliza: maiden name may possibly be Farmer (from a taped recollection of Lloyd Rowe). She is possibly the Elizabeth listed in the 1850 Wayne County, VA census living with Thomas Roe and family. The peculiar way the household was listed brings this theory to mind as Thomas and his daughters were listed, followed by Elizabeth, Uriah and the younger Thomas implying that those three were a family unit in of themselves.... This is probably the same person. I have opted to use the more comprehensive data until I find proof to the contrary.... ND

Notes about Carl: Family lore stated that Carl deserted the German army and immigrated to this country in 1843 (the date bears out in immigration records, though his supposed age of 14 was in error). His surname was pronounced (and possibly spelled) Von Cruzen... the spelling here came from a handwritten history by my great-grandmother, Johanna Koenig Cruys. In any event, Carl dropped the "Von" from his surname and changed its spelling to Cruys . After coming to this country, he often went by the Anglo name of Charles.

In the 1870 Iowa and US censuses, there was a Cathrina Cruys, aged 82 (birthdate around 1788, birthplace of Prussia), living with Carl and Elize... this is probably Carl's mother.
